I have said it before and I will say it again… I just love the North Carolina State Fair! We always have such a wonderful time wandering around to see the sights, testing the unique deep fried foods, and experiencing the thrilling rides on the Midway. There is no doubt that we always have a great time at the State Fair!
This year, I was fortunate enough to attend Media Day on the Monday before the fair opened. My colleague, Molly, and I were delighted to see the new State Fair t-shirts and had the chance to try the newest deep fried offerings: red velvet covered Oreo cookies covered in a scrumptious glaze and deep fried Cowtails! Both were very tasty, although I must admit that I’m partial to the Oreo cookie in general… We also had the chance to watch a CAN-struction being built of the Dorton Arena! All those cans and bottles will benefit the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC! The sculpture is finished now and on display in the lobby of the Expo building. (Don’t miss it!)
What else is great about the fair? Check this out:
Tomorrow, October 22 is Senior Citizens Day – Seniors can enjoy a free breakfast and entertainment in Dorton Arena from 9 am to 11 am. Wednesday, October 23, is Military Appreciation Day… and, although military adults receive a discount of $5 every day at the fair, on the 23rd, there will be special performances by the 440th Army Band.
Thursday, October 24 is particularly noteworthy for yours truly… it’s Food Lion Hunger Relief Day! Fairgoers can bring five cans of food in exchange for free admission to the fair. All donated food goes to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC to support our neighbors in need. Over 500 Food Bank volunteers and staff members will be at gates throughout the day and night to collect cans at the gates. Last year, over 214,000 pounds were contributed!
I’ve also just been informed that Commissioner Steve Troxler issued a challenge! If 250,000 pounds of food are collected, the State Fair will donated $1,000 to the Food Bank… if 300,000 lbs are collected, the fair will donate $2,500… and if 325,000 lbs are collected, the fair will donate $5,000! So, help spread the word about this incredible chance to boost the support of our communities!
There are so many wonderful reasons to experience the State Fair… why not come on out and see what the excitement is all about? To encourage you even further, check out the recent photos I snapped of our visit:
