Happy Little Growth Funnels! UNC-TV’s Bob Ross Campaign Engages Multiple Generations Through Digital & On-Air
As FY19 came to a close, UNC-TV had been brainstorming a new concept. “As we were coming up with ideas, our love for Bob Ross surfaced,” Newmeyer says of the legendary host of The Joy of Painting. The campaign focused heavily on what marketers identify as the “growth funnel,” a multi-step process that helps turn initial contact acquisitions into supporters and revenue.

UNC-TV Quadruples Giving Tuesday Goal, Raises $44,117 in Single Day
Last November, Newmeyer led the station in a modest Giving Tuesday effort, with a goal of raising $5,000 using social media and email. It generated around $7,400. “We were happy we got that engagement, but I knew we could do much more,” she says. So this year, the station launched a fully integrated campaign that used practically every communications outlet apart from direct mail.

UNC-TV Sees Revenue Rise: Ups Digital Investment & Reduces On-Air Fundraising
Last summer, the University of North Carolina’s public television network, UNC-TV, hired Jen Newmeyer as its digital fundraising manager. Newmeyer is a digital fundraising veteran with a long history of nonprofit work, and her position represented the first of its kind at the state-wide network. Over the next fiscal year, that hiring paid off. The network cut on-air fundraising by $500,000, but more than made up the difference, with online giving increasing by $600,000. From FY16 to FY17, online revenue jumped from $831,000 to $1.4 million—an impressive 70% increase.
